August marks Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. Our eye care professionals at Sites Vision Clinic celebrate the month by reminding our community about the importance of children's eye care and protective eyewear for athletic activities. Annual eye exams are important for children as they are constantly growing, changing, and developing. Regular eye exams ensure the early diagnosis and prompt treatment of several eye conditions commonly first detected during childhood. During a comprehensive eye exam, our optometrists examine your child's eyes, testing visual acuity and looking for signs of any eye problems including:

• myopia (nearsightedness)
• hyperopia (farsightedness)
• astigmatism
• color blindness or color deficiency
• amblyopia (lazy eye)
• strabismus (crossed eyes)
• ptosis (drooping eyelid)

Many of these conditions can be corrected with prescription lenses or reversed with proper treatment if diagnosed early on. Children should have an eye exam as infants to test eye development and function and then begin regular annual eye exams by age three.
